The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in the UK Enhances Network Time Protocol Service

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in the UK has recently unveiled an upgraded Network Time Protocol (NTP) service, strengthening the country’s national timing infrastructure.

This enhancement is part of the broader National Timing Centre (NTC) program, which aims to establish a distributed and resilient framework for accurate time and frequency distribution across the UK.

Precise timekeeping is crucial for various digital operations in today’s world, including financial transactions and communication networks. NTP allows computers and devices to synchronize their internal clocks with reliable external references.

Regular synchronization is essential to prevent clock drift, which could lead to errors or vulnerabilities in systems that rely on precise timing.

Dr. Leon Lobo, Head of the NTC program at NPL, emphasized the importance of precise and resilient timekeeping for the UK’s digital infrastructure.

“This updated service underscores our commitment to supporting the reliability and security of vital systems, technological advancements, and economic progress,” Dr. Lobo stated.

Enhancing the UK’s Timing Infrastructure

NPL’s improved Network Time Protocol service now operates five stratum 1 servers across three different locations in the UK, an increase from the previous two servers.

These servers are directly linked to NPL’s atomic clocks, providing a reliable ground-based alternative to satellite signals. This enhanced setup aims to enhance resilience and reliability, ensuring that critical systems remain operational even during satellite signal disruptions.

The revised service guidelines highlight the importance of secure and accurate NTP implementation.

Best practices include utilizing authentication protocols and hardware timestamping to minimize timing errors and enhance trustworthiness.

Supporting Next-Generation Technologies

It leverages the established NPLTime® platform, which has been commercially serving the finance and other industries for the past seven years.
