Ethical AI and Data Revolution at GATE: Driving Responsible Innovation

Revolutionizing Urban, Health, and Industrial Transformations with GATE
GATE Institute pioneers the integration of digital twins, advanced machine learning, and secure data-sharing infrastructures to drive sustainable changes in urban, health, and industrial sectors.
GATE Institute stands as the leading Big Data and artificial intelligence (AI) Centre of Excellence in Bulgaria and Eastern Europe. It is a collaborative effort between Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski, Chalmers University of Technology, and Chalmers Industrial Technologies, supported by the European Commission (EC) and the Bulgarian Government. GATE’s mission is to foster a data-driven smart society by harnessing the transformative power of Big Data and AI technologies, driving societal impact through research and innovation in domains like Future Cities and Digital Health.
As the Bulgarian hub of the International Data Spaces Association (IDSA), GATE plays a crucial role in establishing secure and trusted data-sharing environments. By offering cutting-edge infrastructure and services, GATE aims to become the nation’s premier Data Space, promoting collaborative innovation while upholding data sovereignty and privacy. Additionally, GATE champions the democratization of AI through decentralized machine learning algorithms that enable federated learning, device-centric AI, and ML crowd training.
With a focus on ontological engineering models and semantic technologies, GATE is pioneering a new era of intelligence capable of handling static and dynamic data across various business domains.
Aligned with Europe’s regulatory framework on AI ethics, GATE actively supports the implementation of the EU AI Act, guiding businesses, governments, and academia in adopting compliant AI practices. The institute’s expertise in responsible AI ensures that innovation aligns with legal, ethical, and societal norms.
Empowering Future Cities through Digital Twins
The Future Cities domain explores the potential of digital twin technologies in addressing urban challenges. By developing a scalable city digital twin, GATE aims to enhance urban planning, design, and service delivery. The project involves creating a high-quality 3D city model of Sofia, enriching it with semantic data, and utilizing it for simulation, analysis, and visualization. The digital twin concept emphasizes designing and testing urban environments digitally before implementation, showcasing the value of data-driven decision-making in city processes.
The 3D model of Sofia integrates cadastral data, remote sensing information, and FIWARE Smart Data Models to provide a detailed representation of the city. This model serves as a foundation for various applications, including urban planning, environmental analysis, and transportation simulations, highlighting the potential of digital twins in shaping sustainable urban development.
Transforming Healthcare with Digital Innovations
The Digital Health domain at GATE focuses on leveraging AI for early disease diagnosis and real-time patient monitoring. By exploring biomarkers for neurological diseases and developing systems for detecting health emergencies, GATE aims to enhance healthcare outcomes through innovative technology solutions.

GATE’s research in Digital Health extends to real-time patient monitoring, alerting systems, and the integration of biomarkers with remote healthcare solutions. By combining advanced AI techniques with medical expertise, GATE aims to revolutionize patient care and improve health outcomes.
GATE Data Space Lab: A Hub for Secure Data Sharing
As a key player in the International Data Spaces Association, GATE drives the development of secure data-sharing infrastructures through initiatives like the GATE Data Space Lab. This innovative environment serves as a testing ground for secure data exchange scenarios, accelerating the deployment of data-driven solutions.

Through the GATE Dataspace Connector and the establishment of Bulgaria’s Urban Data Space, GATE promotes secure data sharing in urban applications like air quality monitoring and sustainable mobility. By leveraging federated architectures and machine learning, GATE enables insights from distributed datasets without compromising data privacy.
Empowering Innovation with the GATE Data Platform
The GATE Data Platform serves as a cornerstone for research and innovation, offering a robust infrastructure for internal projects and external collaborations. With a focus on modern engineering practices and AI technologies, the platform supports a wide range of data-centric projects, including large-scale initiatives like DiverSea.

The platform’s virtualized environment supports a wide range of data processing and analysis tools, enabling seamless collaboration and innovation across diverse domains. With a strong focus on AI and data management, the GATE Data Platform drives cutting-edge research and facilitates impactful data-driven solutions.
The Project “Big Data for Smart Society” (GATE) is funded by Horizon 2020 Teaming programme and Operational Programme “Research, Innovation and Digitalisation for Intelligent Transformation“ 2021-2027 r., co-funded by the European Union.
