Revolutionizing Europe’s Digital Landscape with €75m EURO-3C Initiative

An ambitious €75 million initiative, EURO-3C, has emerged in Europe with the goal of reshaping the continent’s digital infrastructure. This groundbreaking project aims to seamlessly connect telecommunications networks, edge computing sites, cloud platforms, and artificial intelligence capabilities within a unified federated framework.

Unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2026, EURO-3C is backed by the European Commission through the Horizon Europe research programme. Spearheaded by Telefónica, the consortium boasts over 70 organizations from 13 countries, including telecom operators, cloud providers, research institutions, universities, and industrial companies.

The initiative, presented as a strategic move by European Commission representatives and Telefónica executives, is envisioned to establish a more autonomous and resilient digital foundation for Europe’s economy.

Renate Nikolay, Deputy Director General at the European Commission, emphasized the importance of secure digital communication infrastructures made in Europe, leveraging telco-edge-cloud convergence and AI capabilities. EURO-3C aims to unite European players in constructing a secure and sovereign convergent communications landscape for the benefit of various industrial sectors and society as a whole.

EURO-3C: A Unified Approach to European Digital Infrastructure

EURO-3C is designed to interconnect existing national and commercial capabilities, establishing a federated model that avoids centralization. The architecture links telecom and cloud resources across multiple operators and vendors to ensure interoperability and shared standards.

With over 70 edge and cloud nodes operational in 13 European countries, the platform combines distributed computing capacity with AI-based orchestration tools to deliver high-performance digital services while upholding stringent security and data governance requirements.

The initiative aligns with the European Union’s Digital Decade 2030 objectives, focusing on secure, sustainable, and scalable digital infrastructure as a cornerstone for competitiveness and technological sovereignty.

Implementing EURO-3C Across Strategic Sectors

Unlike typical research projects, EURO-3C is being directly implemented in operational environments. The infrastructure is set to support applications in key sectors such as automotive, transport, energy, and public safety, prioritizing low latency, reliability, and data protection.

The consortium plans to showcase nine large-scale use cases to validate technical performance and commercial viability, testing the scalability and interoperability of the federated model across borders and industries.

By integrating edge computing, cloud platforms, and telecom networks, EURO-3C aims to streamline Europe’s digital services landscape and offer enterprises a consistent framework for deploying advanced applications.
