Eurail Confirms Stolen Traveler Data Offered for Sale on Dark Web

Eurail B.V., the company that grants access to 250,000 kilometers of European railways, has verified that data stolen during a breach earlier this year is now being sold on the dark web.

The firm, based in the Netherlands, manages and sells passes for train travel across Europe, including Eurail and Interrail, allowing for flexible multi-country trips.

Popular among young European travelers participating in the EU’s DiscoverEU program, Eurail’s passes have a wide reach.

Recently, Eurail disclosed a data breach where unauthorized individuals gained access to the customer database, compromising sensitive information such as full names, passport details, ID numbers, bank account IBANs, health information, and contact details like email addresses and phone numbers.

The company is currently investigating the extent of the data breach and the number of affected customers. They have also notified data protection authorities as per GDPR requirements and will soon notify authorities outside the EU.

Customers whose information may have been compromised should remain vigilant against potential phishing and scam attempts. Eurail recommends updating passwords on the Rail Planner app account and resetting them on all platforms where the same credentials are used.

It is advised that customers monitor their bank account activity closely and report any suspicious transactions to their bank immediately. Additionally, a FAQ page has been created to address customer concerns, and inquiries can be sent to privacyhelp@eurail.com.
