Exclusive Look at the Baby BYD Shark Ute: Patent Filing Unveiled
BYD, a Chinese automaker, has revealed the design of a smaller dual-cab ute in a patent application submitted to the European Union Property Office. This new model, which could be a pickup version of the Sealion 6 mid-size SUV available in Australia, was previously spotted camouflaged. The smaller ute will be built on a car-based monocoque platform, in contrast to the ladder-frame construction used in the Shark 6 plug-in hybrid dual-cab. This design choice positions the new model to compete with compact car-based dual-cabs like the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz, which are not available in right-hand drive markets.
Although BYD Australia has not confirmed the global unveiling of this model, the leaked filings suggest that it will be a compact version of the Sealion 6, Australia’s top-selling plug-in hybrid vehicle. The “baby Shark” will feature a conventional tray at the rear, distinguishing it from the SUV design of the Song Plus. With its Sealion 6 base, the new model is expected to be shorter in length and lighter in weight compared to its larger sibling.
The upcoming ute is likely to feature hybrid powertrains, similar to the Sealion 6, which offers a range of power outputs and battery sizes. It is anticipated to launch in Europe and potentially in Australia, expanding BYD’s lineup in the country. In Australia, where mid-size dual-cabs dominate the market, the new BYD model could offer a unique alternative.
BYD Australia aims to achieve a top-three ranking in the local auto market next year. The company plans to evaluate all available models across its sister brands, including Fangchengbao, Denza, and Yangwang. The launch of the Denza luxury brand, featuring large PHEV off-road SUVs, is scheduled for the near future. Additionally, BYD’s Australian lineup will be expanded with the introduction of the Sealion 5, a Toyota RAV4-sized PHEV SUV, as well as the Atto 1 electric hatch and Atto 2 electric SUV, positioned as the nation’s most affordable EV options.
In conclusion, BYD’s expansion plans in Australia signal a shift towards electrified and compact vehicle offerings, catering to the evolving preferences of the market. This strategic approach aligns with the growing demand for sustainable and technologically advanced transportation solutions.
