Hotter Volkswagen T-Roc R spied, Australian release on the cards

The Volkswagen T-Roc R: A New Performance Hero in the Making

The highly-anticipated Volkswagen T-Roc R has recently been spotted undergoing testing, hinting at its upcoming official debut later this year. This performance-oriented model is poised to become the flagship of the second-generation T-Roc small SUV lineup, with potential plans for an Australian release in 2028.

Earlier in August 2025, Volkswagen unveiled the regular versions of the new T-Roc, which are set to compete with popular models like the Nissan Qashqai, Toyota Corolla Cross, and Hyundai Kona. These variants will feature mild-hybrid and hybrid powertrains, along with the MQB Evo platform that currently powers the Volkswagen Golf.

While a sport-focused R-Line variant was showcased during the global reveal, the full-fledged T-Roc R performance model has remained mostly under wraps. Only a camouflaged prototype teased by Volkswagen in late 2025 has given a glimpse of what’s to come, with production expected to kick off in October 2027.

Our spy photographers have managed to capture images of a test vehicle, providing a closer look at the T-Roc R’s design ahead of its anticipated launch. Although an official confirmation for its Australian arrival is still pending, the outgoing T-Roc proved to be a best-seller for Volkswagen in the country last year.

The upcoming T-Roc R is rumored to be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, similar to the one found in the Golf R. This engine is capable of producing 245kW of power and 420Nm of torque, potentially with 48-volt mild-hybrid support. Expectations are that it will also feature a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive, similar to its predecessors.

Compared to the previous generation, the new T-Roc has grown in size, offering increased interior space and a larger boot capacity. Set to slot between the T-Cross light SUV and the Tiguan mid-size SUV in Volkswagen’s lineup, the new T-Roc will cater to those seeking a versatile and stylish compact SUV.

As Volkswagen continues to expand its SUV range in Australia, with models like the Tayron and Tiguan making waves in the market, the T-Roc R is expected to add a new level of excitement to the brand’s lineup. Stay tuned for more updates on this eagerly awaited performance SUV.
