2026 GWM Haval H6 GT PHEV update spied in Australia ahead of expected launch

An updated GWM Haval H6 GT PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) SUV has been spotted in Australia, showcasing interior and powertrain updates ahead of its anticipated debut in local dealerships in the near future.

The GWM Haval H6 GT PHEV, set to rival the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and BYD Sealion 6, was seen at a Melbourne shopping center carpark with ‘PHEV Hi4’ badges, indicating the inclusion of the brand’s enhanced PHEV all-wheel-drive system already available on the standard Haval H6 PHEV.

The revamped model boasts a refreshed interior, featuring a larger center screen, simplified center console, and a new steering wheel – changes that mirror those seen in a recent version unveiled in Brazil.

Inquiries about the updated H6 GT PHEV for the Australian market were met with a response from a company representative stating that there is currently no information available regarding the confirmation or timing of this update for Australia and New Zealand. However, the launch is expected to take place during the second quarter of 2026.

While no official confirmation has been provided by GWM Australia regarding changes for the local market, the updated version unveiled in Brazil appears to bring the same enhancements as the model spotted in Australia.

While the exterior design remains unchanged, significant upgrades can be found in the cabin. The Brazilian version features a 14.6-inch center touchscreen, an increase from the current Australian model’s 12.3-inch unit, running on new, faster Coffee OS 3 software. Improved responsiveness and features such as AI-based voice command are expected, along with the addition of the GWM Connected Services smartphone app, initially introduced in Australia on the Tank 500 in 2024.

The app allows for remote control of door locks, horn, lights, climate control, and heated and ventilated seats. Additionally, the Brazilian unveiling showcases the same new steering wheel as the locally sighted vehicle, along with a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a simplified, less cluttered center console.

The updated model also introduces the Hi4 all-wheel-drive hybrid powertrain, already available on the Haval H6 PHEV, producing total system outputs of 268kW and 760Nm, with an official combined fuel consumption of 1.1L/100km.

The new H6 GT PHEV utilizes a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and a dedicated hybrid transmission combined with two electric motors to deliver all-wheel drive, similar to the outgoing H6 GT PHEV and the current H6 PHEV.

Noteworthy changes include a larger 35kWh battery, an upgrade from the previous 19.09kWh, matching the outgoing Australian-market H6 GT PHEV. GWM has been emphasizing its ‘Hi4’ and ‘Hi4T’ all-wheel-drive systems locally, already present in the Tank 500 PHEV and the Cannon Alpha ute, as part of efforts to comply with stricter emissions regulations in Australia.

The Brazilian-market H6 GT PHEV is claimed to produce 380kW and 772Nm, with a quoted electric range of 170km on the WLTP cycle, offering context for the updated Australian-market H6 GT PHEV.

The outgoing model boasts total outputs of 321kW and 762Nm, with 180km of electric-only range on the NEDC cycle. The H6 PHEV, with a smaller battery, provides 100km of NEDC range in all-wheel drive configuration.

The updated H6 GT also boasts a claimed 0-100km/h time of 4.8 seconds, aligning with the acceleration claim of the current H6 PHEV available in Australian showrooms.
