BMW iX3 40: A Closer Look at the Upcoming Entry-Level Variant

As the launch of the BMW iX3 50 xDrive approaches, the German automaker has already announced a price increase for the model in Europe. With a new starting price of €70,900 in Germany, it represents a €2,000 premium over the initial launch price. However, BMW is expected to lower the price back below €70,000 soon, albeit with some compromises in the upcoming iX3 40 variant.

Changes in Powertrain and Performance

The iX3 40 is set to feature a rear-wheel-drive setup with a rear-mounted motor, delivering 315 horsepower and 500 Newton-meters of torque. In comparison, the iX3 50 xDrive boasts a combined 463 hp and 645 Nm of torque. Despite the power difference, the acceleration of the iX3 40 is expected to be slightly slower than its dual-motor counterpart, completing the 0 to 62 mph sprint in more than five seconds.

Battery Downgrade for a Lighter Weight

One significant change in the iX3 40 is the adoption of a smaller 82.6-kWh battery pack, replacing the larger 108.7-kWh pack in the iX3 50 xDrive. This adjustment will result in a lower range for the upcoming variant, but it will also contribute to a weight reduction of up to 200 kilograms. The lighter configuration of the iX3 40 will weigh around 2,085 kg without a driver, enhancing its agility and efficiency.

Production and Market Availability

The rear-wheel-drive iX3 40 is expected to enter production in July for the European market and in November for the U.S. market. Furthermore, an iX3 40 xDrive variant is likely to follow, incorporating an asynchronous motor to the front axle. Additionally, BMW is planning to introduce the M60 variant and the X3 M model to expand the iX3 lineup in the coming year.

Future Prospects and Variants

Looking ahead, BMW is rumored to introduce an iX3 30 variant in China based on the long-wheelbase iX3 (NA6) model. The larger electric crossover is set to debut at the Beijing Auto Show, with production of the iX3 30L xDrive expected to commence in May. This expansion of the iX3 range reflects BMW’s commitment to offering a diverse lineup of electric vehicles to cater to different markets and preferences.
