Bioware veteran heading Mass Effect-like Exodus' studio steps aside, leaving team to "polishing and tuning" ahead of 2027 release

James Ohlen Steps Away from Studio Head Role at Archetype Entertainment

Renowned Bioware creative director and lead designer, James Ohlen, has announced his decision to step away from his position as studio head at Archetype Entertainment. Archetype, the developers behind the highly anticipated Mass Effect-inspired sci-fi shooter Exodus, was co-founded by Ohlen in 2019. The game, known for its distinct blend of Matthew McConaughey charm and space bears, is set to make its debut in early 2027 following a recent trailer reveal at the Geoff Awards.

Transition to a New Role

The news of Ohlen’s role shift within Archetype’s parent company, Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast, was confirmed in a report by Bloomberg. According to Hasbro corporate communications vice president, Abby Hodes, Ohlen expressed that his work on Exodus was complete and that he felt confident in the team’s ability to handle the final polishing and tuning of the game. As a result, Ohlen will be transitioning to a new role as a creative consultant at Wizards of the Coast, focusing on tabletop RPGs.

Initially revealed in 2023, Exodus promises a unique gameplay experience that combines Mass Effect-inspired roleplaying elements with time dilation mechanics and impactful choices. The addition of McConaughey-esque visuals adds a cinematic flair to the game, as seen in the 2024 trailer. While the game’s direction may not appeal to everyone, the presence of bears and frogs in the trailers hints at a diverse and intriguing world waiting to be explored.

Expanding Horizons

Archetype co-founder and general manager, Chad Robertson, reiterated Hasbro’s vision for Exodus to extend beyond gaming and into other forms of media. This strategic shift explains Ohlen’s move to tabletop RPGs, aligning with Hasbro’s broader plans for the franchise. Despite the game’s scheduled release in 2027, the studio’s proactive approach to development ensures that Exodus will meet the expectations of both gamers and media enthusiasts alike.
