Exploring the Electric iX5: A First Glimpse in the USA

BMW enthusiasts have been buzzing with excitement after a sighting of a prototype of the next-generation BMW X5 (G65) near Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey. All indications suggest that this is the highly anticipated fully electric BMW iX5. The timing of this sighting aligns with a flurry of BMW test mules being spotted on both sides of the Atlantic in recent days, showcasing the brand’s innovative developments.

The design of the X5 prototype, although still concealed under camouflage, showcases BMW’s Neue Klasse design language, reminiscent of the upcoming iX3. This design evolution reflects BMW’s shift towards a cleaner and more architectural aesthetic. The distinctive vertical kidney grille on the front end is exclusive to SUV models, with horizontal kidneys reserved for non-SUV models like the i3 sedan. Larger vehicles like the X5 will continue to feature prominent grille designs with refined detailing.

One of the most intriguing details of the G65 X5 is the absence of traditional door handles, replaced by sleek winglets integrated into the beltline. This design choice hints at electrically operated doors, aligning with BMW’s focus on streamlined surfaces and enhanced aerodynamics. These subtle changes illustrate the influence of Neue Klasse design thinking on BMW’s SUV lineup.

At the rear, the prototype offers a glimpse of the taillights, featuring wider light clusters that meet at the center of the tailgate and a discreetly updated BMW roundel. The test mules also reveal a sporty roof spoiler with vertical fins, adding a touch of athleticism to the design. Additionally, the black horizontal strip across the tailgate conceals the absence of the split-opening rear hatch on the new G65 X5.

The production of the G65 X5 is slated to begin in October 2026, with a diverse range of drivetrain options set to be offered. The vehicle will be BMW’s first production model to feature five different drivetrains, including a hydrogen variant developed in collaboration with Toyota. BMW M variants, including the X5 M and M Performance models, are also in the pipeline, with both V8 and electric options in development.

Before the arrival of high-performance versions, the G65 X5 will launch with more mainstream offerings, including 40 xDrive and 40d xDrive variants. The plug-in hybrid model is expected to follow shortly after. The innovative design, advanced technology, and diverse drivetrain options make the next-generation BMW X5 a highly anticipated addition to the BMW lineup.
