Feather Fury: A Retro Anime-Inspired Bullet Hell Adventure
Birdcage: An Anime-Inspired Sword Action Shooting Game
For a multitude of reasons, I am unable to express my full admiration for Birdcage, an incredibly stylish “sword action shooting game” that exudes an anime vibe. The game’s aesthetic and gameplay are so captivating that it leaves me in awe of its sheer brilliance. Let’s delve into why Birdcage stands out among its peers.

Birdcage, an upcoming title developed by Polygon Bird Games, is the brainchild of Giannis Milonogiannis, a renowned comic book artist with experience working for major publishers like DC and Marvel, and Barry Topping, the talented composer behind Paradise Killer. Milonogiannis’s artistic vision shines through in the game’s visuals, offering a blend of diverse influences that are evident in the recently released demo.
Drawing inspiration from ’90s arcade games, Birdcage’s introductory cutscenes evoke a sense of nostalgia reminiscent of classic arcade titles. As the pilot of the Halycon ship, players are tasked with a mission to thwart a new weapon that threatens to reshape the universe. The art style employed in these scenes pays homage to iconic JRPG classics, reminiscent of the evocative cover art of games like Breath of Fire 4.
Birdcage exudes a retro charm that feels like it could have been adapted into a cult classic OVA released on VHS, cherished by collectors and sought after for its rarity. Despite the demo’s concise narrative and limited stages, the game’s allure lies in its minimalistic storytelling, leaving players intrigued and hungry for more.
In terms of gameplay, players have a variety of combat options at their disposal. Whether unleashing a spread of bullets to target multiple enemies or focusing on concentrated fire for maximum damage, each choice comes with its own strategic implications. Additionally, the inclusion of a sword adds a dynamic element to the gameplay, allowing players to deflect bullets, engage in close combat, or deliver ranged attacks. The gameplay may seem straightforward, but the challenge lies in mastering these mechanics to survive the intense battles with limited health and lives.
Furthermore, Birdcage offers an arcade mode for players seeking a streamlined experience without the narrative elements, as well as a score attack mode where enemies continually spawn within a time limit, testing players’ skills and reflexes. It’s a nod to the classic arcade era, providing a nostalgic yet engaging gameplay experience.
Whether you choose to experience the demo on Steam or await the full release on November 18th, Birdcage promises a thrilling and immersive gaming experience that blends retro aesthetics with modern gameplay mechanics. Don’t miss out on this unique title that pays homage to the golden age of arcade gaming.
