La Poste Suffers Major Network Incident, Disrupting Online Services

The French national postal service, La Poste, faced a significant setback as all its information systems went offline due to a major network incident. This disruption affected millions of customers, causing disruptions in digital banking and online services.

La Poste confirmed the outage on social media, stating that various platforms, including the main website, mobile app, digital identity service, and the Digiposte document storage platform, were temporarily inaccessible.

While some post office locations experienced service disruptions, customers could still conduct banking and postal transactions at service counters.

According to La Poste, online payments for banking customers remained possible with SMS authentication. Cash withdrawals from ATMs, card payments at in-store POS terminals, and transfers via WERO were still available despite the disruptions.

The company’s website remained down, redirecting customers to its webmail and Digiposte platforms.

La Banque Postale, the banking arm of Groupe La Poste, also faced online and mobile service disruptions. However, core banking operations remained functional, ensuring that essential services like payments, interbank exchanges, and flow processing operated normally.

Despite the outage, online, internet, and mobile card payments were still possible with SMS authentication replacing certification via Certicode.

While La Poste has not provided a timeline for full service restoration or disclosed the incident’s nature, reports suggest that a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack caused the nationwide disruption.

La Poste, a public-owned company with a wide range of services, including package shipping, mail delivery, banking, insurance, and mobile telecommunications, faces challenges in restoring full functionality.
