From Marshes to Models: Ponda’s Sustainable Fashion Revolution
Ponda Secures €2.09 Million Seed Funding for BioPuff Insulation
Ponda, a Bristol-based biomaterials company, has successfully closed a Seed funding round of €2.09 million to drive the commercialization of its flagship product, BioPuff insulation.
The funding round was oversubscribed and co-led by Faber from Lisbon and Counteract from London. Other participants included PDS Ventures, Evenlode Impact, and the Royal College of Art. This brings Ponda’s total funding to €5.6 million, combining venture capital with support from Innovate UK, the H&M Foundation’s Global Change Award, and King Charles III’s Terra Carta Design Lab.
Julian Ellis-Brown, CEO and co-founder of Ponda, highlighted that BioPuff offers a sustainable alternative to synthetic and animal-based insulation while supporting peatland restoration.
The sustainable FashionTech landscape in Europe has seen significant funding rounds, with companies like Fairly Made and Fit Collective securing investments to advance their sustainable solutions in the fashion industry.
Ponda’s Seed round aligns with the trend of investing in sustainable and circular fashion innovations, standing out with its regenerative, plant-based materials approach.
Matt Isaacs, partner at Counteract, praised Ponda’s scientific expertise and regenerative leadership, emphasizing the company’s potential to make a positive impact on the planet.
Founded in 2020, Ponda focuses on developing BioPuff, a plant-based insulation made from wetland crops grown on rewetted peatlands. The company aims to revolutionize performance materials by integrating ecosystem restoration and clean manufacturing.
BioPuff, made from Typha, a wetland crop cultivated through paludiculture, offers thermal properties comparable to goose-down at a lower cost and promotes wetland regeneration.
Rita Sousa, Partner at Faber, recognized Ponda’s potential to drive business opportunities across industries while delivering biodiversity impact at scale.
Ponda’s approach involves rewetting degraded peatlands, growing Typha crops, and converting biomass into high-performance fibers, leading to flood mitigation, climate benefits, and circular manufacturing.

Will Barnard, a farmer in Ponda’s supply chain, highlighted the importance of restored wetlands in protecting farmland and creating new commercial opportunities.
By cultivating Typha on rewetted land, Ponda transforms emissions into a carbon sink, potentially reducing gigatonne-level emissions in the future.
The company’s Bristol facility enables pilot-scale processing of fibers for BioPuff, allowing rapid testing and delivery of industrial-grade insulation. Ponda has partnered with global brands like Berghaus and Stella McCartney to develop sustainable garments.
BioPuff is versatile and suitable for various applications beyond apparel, including home textiles, upholstery, and bedding.
