Gemini Just Got a Huge One-Up Over ChatGPT & Other AI Rivals

Despite my initial reservations about AI assistants, Gemini has become my go-to choice, especially with the recent major upgrade from Google.

Being a Pixel 10 user, I frequently use Gemini. However, certain tasks have been frustrating in the past. The new Personal Intelligence update is set to change that by offering an “experimental, opt-in service” that revolutionizes AI.

The cornerstone of this enhancement is context. While AI often seems impressive in presentations, it usually functions as a glorified web search. Personal Intelligence aims to provide genuinely useful and personalized assistance, setting Gemini apart from other AI systems.

ChatGPT offers a similar feature by linking Gmail through its connector, but Gemini’s integration with Gmail feels more seamless and secure due to both services being from Google.

After years of using Google and Android, the lack of personalized assistance from Gemini has been noticeable. The concept of “connecting the dots” through Personal Intelligence promises tailored results based on individual needs and preferences.

For instance, searching for “San Francisco recommendations” should yield suggestions aligned with personal interests, such as nearby 49ers games and craft beer bars close to the user’s hotel.

Another example highlighted by Google involves shopping for winter car tires. Gemini can reportedly browse through Gmail to find the user’s vehicle make and model, ensuring accurate search results.

The ability to understand individual needs and preferences sets Gemini apart from its AI competitors, making it a compelling choice for users.

What’s the catch?

Like many tech announcements, there are several caveats to consider with this update.

Initially launching in the US, there is no specific timeline for its expansion to other regions, although Google has mentioned plans to introduce it globally soon.

Access to the Personal Intelligence feature requires a Google AI Pro or AI Ultra subscription, priced at least £18.99/$19.99 per month. However, Google assures that it will eventually be available in the free tier and integrated into the AI Mode tool in search.

Users must actively opt-in to enable Personal Intelligence, as it will not be activated by default. Once turned on, the feature will function across web platforms, Android, and iOS on all Gemini models.

Initially limited to personal Google accounts, Personal Intelligence will primarily utilize data from Gmail, Photos, Search, and YouTube History.

Future updates and global rollouts will shed more light on the potential of Personal Intelligence, positioning Gemini as a significant player in the AI landscape.

With Gemini’s expanding influence beyond Android devices, the news of its involvement in the upcoming Siri AI upgrade hints at the platform’s growing prominence.
