GM isn’t ready to rip off the CarPlay/Android Auto band-aid quite yet

General Motors Clarifies Plans to Phase Out Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

In a recent statement, General Motors CEO Mary Barra caused a commotion by announcing the eventual discontinuation of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in all gas-powered vehicles. The company had already successfully eliminated phone mirroring features from most electric vehicles and was now strategizing the removal of support from internal combustion engine vehicles as well.

However, GM has now clarified that this transition will not be immediate. According to spokesperson Malorie Lucich, existing vehicles will not undergo any changes, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will continue to be supported in all GM gas-powered vehicles for the foreseeable future. The company aims to gradually transition to a more integrated experience as it advances toward a centralized computing platform, aligning with the industry trend of software-defined vehicles.

Barra hinted on the Decoder podcast that the phasing out of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will coincide with the launch of new vehicle models. She emphasized consistency in this approach with each new vehicle release.

The implementation of the new centralized vehicle computing platform, announced by GM last week, is expected to precede the removal of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The platform, designed to streamline control modules and enhance over-the-air software updates, is scheduled to debut on the Cadillac Escalade IQ in 2028 before expanding to the company’s gas-powered lineup.
