Google Fi MVNO waiting on Apple to enable RCS for iPhone

iOS 18 Update: RCS Messaging and Google Fi Support

iOS 18 is being rolled out today with RCS messaging to enhance the Android-iPhone messaging experience. However, support is currently not available for all carriers, including Google Fi Wireless.

In a statement, Google has mentioned that only Apple has the capability to enable RCS interoperability for iPhone users on Google Fi. Google Fi has completed all the necessary steps to support iPhone RCS on its end.

With the launch of iOS 18, RCS is now enabled on major US carriers such as AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. Another MVNO where RCS support is not yet available is Mint Mobile.

According to 9to5Mac, carriers need to send an updated file known as the Carrier Bundle to Apple, indicating that RCS support is enabled. Apple can then distribute this file as an over-the-air update without requiring a new OS version.

Update: Apple has included “RCS messaging” in the “Wireless carrier support and features for iPhone” help article.

“We have been working diligently to promote RCS adoption and are thrilled that Apple is embracing RCS with the iOS 18 launch. Initially, Fi users with an Android device can now communicate via RCS with iPhone users who have RCS interoperability enabled. Only Apple has the authority to enable RCS interoperability for iPhone users on Fi, and we hope they will do so in the near future.”

— Google spokesperson

As of now, Google Fi subscribers using Android can engage in RCS communication with iPhone users who have RCS interoperability enabled.
