Google Nest Learning Thermostat Support Discontinued
Google Ends Support for Older Nest Thermostats
In summary
- Support for 1st and 2nd gen Nest Thermostats will cease on 25 October
- No more Google Home or Nest app support or updates
- Basic features will be limited to on-device controls
If you own an older Google Nest Learning Thermostat, you’re in for a change. The full smart functionality of these devices will end in just a day.
In May, Google announced the discontinuation of support for older Nest thermostats, with the termination date set for 25 October, this Saturday.
After this date, 1st and 2nd gen Nest thermostats will no longer be compatible with the Google Nest app or Google Home app.
Additionally, older Nest thermostats will be unpaired and removed from the Nest and Home apps, with no option for users to retain them. Third-party assistant interactions and connected features like Home/Away Assist and Nest Protect connectivity will also be lost.
This means that remote control and status checks for Nest thermostats will no longer be possible. Users will only have the option of directly controlling the thermostat itself, similar to a traditional non-smart thermostat.
The list of Nest Thermostats that will be decommissioned includes:
- Nest Learning Thermostat (1st gen, 2011)
- Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd gen, 2012)
- Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd gen, Europe version, 2014)
What options are there for Nest customers?
For most customers, the Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd gen remains a viable Google smart thermostat. This model was launched in September 2015. The Nest Thermostat E is also available while supplies last, although it is no longer officially sold by Google in the UK or Europe.
Customers may also consider the Tado Smart Thermostat X – Starter Kit, which offers a 50% discount. However, users should be aware of the features that are restricted without a subscription. Tado has moved certain functionalities behind a paywall, potentially limiting functionality for non-subscribers.
The newer Nest Thermostat 4th gen was released over a year ago but is still only available in North America. Owners of older-generation models can receive a $130 discount on the new model to ease the transition.
Google’s future plans for wider availability of its current thermostats remain uncertain. The company’s statement that it will not launch new Nest thermostats in Europe, citing unique heating systems, suggests limited options for customers in the UK.
While the Nest Thermostat gen 3 and Thermostat E will continue to receive security updates and remain controllable via the Nest and Home apps, the duration of this support is unspecified.
Despite the discontinuation of older Nest thermostats, Google Home users can look forward to new devices like Gemini, Home Speaker, and potentially a new Nest Hub.
