Google Pixel 10 Leads the Way for AirDrop Integration on Android Devices
Google is set to bring one of the iPhone’s most coveted features to Android, and the anticipation is high. The feature in question is AirDrop, which has been a staple on iOS devices since 2013, allowing users to securely and seamlessly share photos, videos, and files between iPhones, iPads, and Macs.
While Android has had its own version called Quick Share, it has historically only worked with other devices running Google’s OS. However, in a surprising move, Google has announced that Quick Share will soon be compatible with AirDrop, enabling file sharing between Android and iOS devices.
Initially, this feature will be limited to the Pixel 10 series, with plans to expand it to more Android devices in the future. Users will need to ensure that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled on both sending and receiving devices to utilize this cross-platform file sharing.
A move made in Brussels
Despite appearances, the collaboration between Google and Apple for this feature was non-existent. Google’s Communications Manager confirmed that Apple was not involved in the process, emphasizing that the connection for file sharing is direct and peer-to-peer, avoiding potential security risks.
This development is a direct result of new regulations from the European Union, specifically within the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Apple has been required to transition from its proprietary protocol for AirDrop to a new standard, starting with iOS 26.
Following the release of this new regulation, Google was in a prime position to create a wireless sharing tool compatible with AirDrop, given its expertise as the maker of Android. With the release of this feature, users can now send and receive files from Android devices using AirDrop.
After 12 years, the wait for AirDrop compatibility on Android devices is finally over. Both Google and the EU have played crucial roles in making this feature a reality. For those looking to purchase a compatible Google Pixel phone, detailed reviews of the Pixel 10 series are available.
