Google Takes Legal Action Against Web Scraper for Excessively Gathering Search Data
Google’s SearchGuard and SerpApi: A Technological Battle
Google, in response to the harmful misappropriation of its search results pages and copyrighted content by SerpApi, implemented SearchGuard. This technological measure aimed to restrict access to Google’s content and protect its partner relationships. However, SerpApi quickly found ways to circumvent SearchGuard, engaging in deceptive practices to bypass Google’s protections and violate federal law in the process.
When SearchGuard was launched in January 2025, SerpApi’s access to Google’s search results and copyrighted content was effectively blocked. Undeterred, SerpApi immediately began developing methods to evade SearchGuard’s restrictions, successfully deploying them to continue its operations.
SerpApi’s strategy to counter SearchGuard involves disguising its automated queries as human-generated to deceive Google. By utilizing a network of IP addresses and fake browsers, SerpApi aims to appear as normal users to Google’s systems, allowing it to continue its activities undetected.
