Google’s AI Invasion: How Your Gmail Inbox is Being Taken Over

Gmail now uses AI to help you find meeting times

Google has announced a new AI Inbox view for Gmail that will change the way users interact with their emails. Instead of the traditional list format, this new feature uses artificial intelligence to provide personalized to-dos and summaries of important topics from your emails.

This update could have a significant impact on how users navigate their inboxes, especially for those who have a large volume of emails to manage or already use their inbox as a to-do list. In a demo video, AI Inbox suggests tasks such as rescheduling appointments, replying to messages, and paying fees, as well as summarizing topics like sports seasons and family gatherings.

Initially, Google is rolling out AI Inbox to “trusted testers” in the US using browsers, and it will be available for consumer Gmail accounts first. However, Workspace accounts will not have access to this feature yet. There is currently no way to mark completed tasks, but Google is working on adding this functionality in the future.

The number of to-dos suggested by Gmail is unlimited, but too many tasks could potentially overwhelm users. Despite this, if AI Inbox is successful in providing timely recommendations and summarizing important emails, it could prove to be a valuable tool for users.

In addition to AI Inbox, all consumer Gmail users will also receive suggested replies, AI thread summaries, and the Help Me Write tool at no extra cost. Subscribers to Google One AI Pro and Ultra plans will have access to additional features such as a Grammarly-like proofread tool and AI overviews in search results.

Users who do not wish to use AI features in Gmail can disable them, although this will also disable other smart features like spell checking. Google assures users that Gmail content is not used to train its Gemini AI models.

Overall, the new AI Inbox feature has the potential to revolutionize how users manage their emails and tasks, providing personalized recommendations and summaries to help streamline the inbox experience.
