HomeKit Haven: Exploring Apple’s Innovative Smart Display Experience in iOS Beta
Apple’s Smart Display: What We Know So Far
Rumors have been swirling about Apple’s upcoming smart display, with speculation that it may be unveiled soon. However, issues with Siri have reportedly caused delays in the launch of this highly anticipated device.
Despite the setbacks, recent discoveries in the iOS 18.6 beta suggest that work on the smart display is ongoing. Hidden assets within the code hint at the device’s specifications, including its screen resolution.
One intriguing find is a file located at /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ProgressUI.framework/apple-logo-1088@2x~home.png, indicating that the asset is intended for the internal homeOS platform. The filename also provides clues about the device’s display capabilities.
Apple typically includes various versions of the Apple logo asset tailored to different screen sizes in its devices. The presence of “1088” in the filename, at a 2x scale, suggests that the smart display will have a screen resolution of 2176 pixels wide.
This resolution is comparable to that of the iPad mini, which boasts a screen resolution of 2266×1488. Given this similarity, it is plausible to assume that the smart display will feature a screen size around 8 inches, similar to the iPad mini.
However, reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggest that the smart display may actually have a 7-inch screen, which would result in a lower pixel density compared to the iPad mini. This could be a strategic move by Apple to reduce manufacturing costs and offer a more affordable product.
While these new insights shed light on the smart display’s potential specifications, there is still no definitive timeline for its release. It appears that Apple is diligently working on the device behind the scenes, possibly awaiting the completion of essential Siri features.
