Hyundai Sonata Fuel Tank Recall: Addressing the Melting Issue
Hyundai Recalls 85,043 Sonatas Due to Gas Tank Melting Issue
Hyundai has issued a recall for 85,043 Sonatas due to a serious safety concern involving the potential melting of gas tanks, which could lead to an increased risk of fire. The affected vehicles are those equipped with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder non-hybrid engine, most likely from the model years 2020 to 2023.
Root Cause of the Issue
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified the root cause of the problem as a faulty purge control check valve. This valve allows compressed air to flow back from the turbocharger to the fuel tank, leading to an excess of air entering the tank. This can result in deformation, expansion, and contact with the hot exhaust, potentially causing the tank to melt.
Indicators of the Problem
- Unusual popping noise from the rear of the vehicle.
- Malfunctioning indicator lights on the dashboard.
- Smell of fuel vapors around the car.
- Intermittent starting issues with the vehicle.
Incidents and Response
Hyundai has received seven reported cases of fuel tank-related issues in the United States and Canada. Fortunately, no crashes, injuries, or fatalities have been linked to the recall. Owners affected by the recall will be notified and advised to bring their vehicles to the nearest dealership for inspection. Technicians will then perform necessary repairs, including fixing the fuel tank and related components, as well as updating the ECU software.
Hyundai will reimburse affected owners who have already had the same service performed prior to the recall announcement. The company plans to send out notifications to both owners and dealers via mail starting on January 16 next year. To check if your vehicle is included in the recall, you can visit the NHTSA website for more information.
