ICEBlock developer sues Trump administration over App Store removal

Joshua Aaron, Developer of ICEBlock App, Sues Federal Officials Over App Removal

Joshua Aaron, the creator of the ICEBlock app, has filed a lawsuit against several federal officials, including Attorney General Pam Bondi, US Homeland Security Secretary Kirsti Noem, ICE acting director Todd Lyons, and White House “Border Czar” Tom Homan. The lawsuit alleges that the Trump administration made “unlawful threats” against Aaron and pressured Apple to remove the app from the App Store, which it ultimately did.

In a statement posted on ICEBlock’s official Bluesky account, it was declared, “We promised you that we would fight back, and today we fulfill that promise.” Both Aaron and Apple have not yet responded to requests for comment from The Verge.

Natalie Baldassarre, a spokesperson for the Department of Justice, stated, “No comment beyond the AG’s previous statements.”

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin expressed concerns about ICE tracking apps, mentioning that they jeopardize the safety of law enforcement officers who are pursuing terrorists, criminal organizations, and violent gangs. She defended Apple’s decision to remove such apps, emphasizing the importance of preventing harm to law enforcement personnel.

ICEBlock gained significant attention earlier this year after being featured in a CNN report, leading to a surge in downloads. Despite initial discussions with Apple’s review team, the app was ultimately removed from the App Store following pressure from federal officials.

Concerns over apps like ICEBlock prompted Republican members of the House Committee on Homeland Security to address the potential risks they pose to law enforcement officers. Congressman Andy Ogles even introduced a bill to criminalize the publication of personal information of federal agents that could endanger their safety.
