Google Translate brings real-time speech translations to any headphones

Google Translate Introduces Live Speech Translations for All Headphones

Google Translate has launched a new update that brings live speech translations to any headphones, expanding beyond its initial availability on Pixel Buds. This update supports over 70 languages and is being rolled out today in beta. All you need is a compatible Android phone with the Translate app to access this feature, unlike Apple’s similar functionality, which is limited to AirPods.

Enhanced Text Translations and Gemini Integration

In addition to live speech translations, Google Translate now offers improved text translations. Through its integration with Gemini, Translate can now provide more accurate translations of phrases that include idioms and slang. This includes expressions like “stealing my thunder,” where the literal meaning may differ from the actual intended message.

Expansion of Practice Feature

Google Translate’s latest update also includes an expansion of its Practice feature. This feature, which was introduced in beta in August, is now available in 20 new countries and supports additional languages. Similar to Duolingo, Practice utilizes AI to create personalized language learning sessions based on your proficiency level. These sessions include vocabulary practice and listening comprehension exercises.

Availability and Rollout

Live speech-to-speech translation is currently rolling out in the US, Mexico, and India on Android devices. It is expected to be introduced to the iOS Translate app next year. Improved text translations are already available in the US and Mexico on both Android and iOS Translate apps, as well as on the web version of Translate. The Practice feature is still in beta, so it may not be accessible to all users at this time.
