Blue Origin Announces TeraWave Network to Compete with SpaceX

Blue Origin, the space company founded by Jeff Bezos, has unveiled its latest project to rival SpaceX’s Starlink. The TeraWave network, set to launch satellite deployments by the end of 2027, promises unparalleled bandwidth of up to 6Tb for both upload and download speeds, available anywhere on Earth.

Unlike its competitors, Blue Origin’s TeraWave network is designed specifically for enterprise customers. Former Amazon Alexa executive and current Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp emphasized that the network’s architecture is tailored to meet the needs of businesses, data centers, and government users who require reliable connectivity for critical operations.

The TeraWave network boasts a unique “multi-orbit” design featuring 5,408 optically connected satellites. While most satellites will operate in low-Earth orbit, providing high-speed wireless connections of up to 144Gbps to ground-based customers, 128 satellites in medium-Earth orbit will offer bidirectional connections of up to 6Tb, ensuring exceptional connectivity options.

In contrast to SpaceX’s Starlink and Amazon’s Leo satellite internet network, Blue Origin plans to cater to a more exclusive customer base, aiming to connect a maximum of approximately 100,000 users. The focus will be on tens of thousands of enterprise, data center, and government clients who rely on stable and secure internet connections for their operations.

Amazon is also exploring the enterprise market with its Leo Ultra antennas, offering impressive download speeds of 1Gbps and upload speeds of 400Mbps. Meanwhile, Starlink is gearing up to introduce gigabit speeds later this year, intensifying the competition in the satellite internet industry.
