Apple recently unveiled a slew of new products, including the M5 MacBook Air, M5 Pro, M5 Max MacBook Pro models, and the innovative MacBook Neo. However, one notable omission from the lineup was the 24-inch iMac, which has not been updated since late 2024 and is still running on the M4 chip.

While the Mac mini also received its last update around the same time, the delay in refreshing the iMac is more conspicuous. Many expected a new iMac to be released last fall when Apple introduced the M5 chip to other devices like the 14-inch MacBook Pro and iPad Pro. However, the absence of an updated iMac led to speculations about Apple’s plans for the desktop computer.

Apple has a history of skipping updates for the 24-inch iMac, with the last major update occurring in early 2021 with the introduction of the M1 chip. It took almost two and a half years before the M3 model was released in late 2023. This delay was accompanied by the launch of a new MacBook Pro lineup, while the Mac mini was also left untouched until the release of the M4 and M4 Pro models in October 2024.

Rumors suggest that Apple may be waiting to introduce an M6 chip or even an M7 chip before updating the iMac. There are also talks of a significant overhaul that would transition the iMac to an OLED display. Reports from industry sources indicate that Apple is considering larger 24-inch OLED panels with increased brightness and resolution for the new iMac.

However, the transition to OLED displays may take some time, with speculations pointing towards a potential release date of 2029 or later. Supply chain reports suggest that Apple is working with display suppliers to develop the necessary technology for the new iMac, with quality testing and refinement processes currently underway.

While the exact timeline for the release of the OLED iMac remains uncertain, it is clear that Apple is planning a significant upgrade for the popular desktop computer. As the company continues to innovate and push the boundaries of technology, fans can expect an exciting new iMac in the future.
