Kojima’s Matrix Game: Insider Report Exposed
The Unfulfilled Collaboration Between Hideo Kojima and The Matrix Franchise
In the bygone era of the last century, whispers circulated about Hideo Kojima potentially developing a video game inspired by the iconic movie, The Matrix. Regrettably, this project never materialized, as Shiny Entertainment seized the opportunity and released two games, Enter the Matrix and The Path of Neo, both of which seamlessly integrated into the Matrix universe. Personally, I recall losing myself in the captivating world of Enter The Matrix during one memorable Christmas season.
A recent interview with Christopher Bergstresser, a former vice president of licensing at Konami Digital Entertainment, shed light on a fascinating revelation. It turns out that the Wachowskis, creators of The Matrix, held Kojima in high regard and even met with him, accompanied by Aki Saito and Kasumi Kitaue from Konami, to discuss the prospect of Kojima spearheading a Matrix game development. Intriguingly, Christopher recounted the moment when the Wachowskis earnestly expressed their desire to collaborate with Kojima on the Matrix game, only to receive a straightforward refusal from Kitaue.
Despite the initial rejection, Kojima’s interest in the project persisted. However, other commitments, notably his involvement with Metal Gear Solid 2 under Konami’s banner, prevented the fruition of the Matrix game collaboration. Nevertheless, Kojima maintained correspondence with the Wachowskis, culminating in a meeting in 2000 where they explored the thematic parallels between their respective works. Kojima’s admiration for The Matrix was evident as he acknowledged the cinematic masterpiece’s influence on his creative vision, with certain concepts planned for his future projects coincidentally mirrored in The Matrix.
Fast forward to the present day, Kojima’s renowned title, Death Stranding, delves into themes reminiscent of The Matrix saga, delving into the enigmatic realms of reality and alternate dimensions. Notably, the character Higgs in Death Stranding bears striking resemblances to the iconic Agent Smith from The Matrix franchise, further showcasing Kojima’s affinity for the Wachowskis’ visionary storytelling.
Looking ahead, Kojima’s upcoming project, OD for Microsoft, promises an anthology horror experience with acclaimed directors contributing to distinct episodes. While details remain scarce, Jordan Peele’s involvement has been confirmed, sparking speculation about potential collaborations with other visionary filmmakers like the Wachowskis for future installments of the game.
