Laughing Through the 19th Century Turd-Collecting Game: My Horse’s Unfortunate Demise

I can't say I enjoy this 19th century turd-collecting game but it did make me laugh when I patted my horse to death

Nightsoil is a captivating top-down narrative adventure set in 1854 London during the cholera epidemic, following the story of a gong farmer – a collector of human waste. Gong farmers, mandated to work after dark to avoid disturbing the public, were often overlooked and despised. In this game, you embody a gong farmer nearing the end of his career, accompanied by his loyal carthorse, Ol’ Boy, reminiscing about his youth and the possibilities that could have been.

Despite its grim subject matter, Nightsoil offers a unique perspective on a neglected profession during a dark period in history. Developed by Miniscule Mayhem, known for their diverse portfolio including Top Steed and Back to Stables, the game delves into themes of mortality and nostalgia. However, the developer’s penchant for quirky horse-related games raises eyebrows, with references to turd emojis and a horse named “mischievous George.” The juxtaposition of serious themes with lighthearted elements may leave players questioning the game’s intentions.

While Nightsoil attempts to tackle weighty topics through hand-drawn flashbacks and emotional storytelling, it occasionally veers into parody territory. The inclusion of a Horse Comfort gauge, affected by unsettling sights like rat swarms, adds a unique gameplay element. Managing Ol’ Boy’s well-being while navigating the urban landscape presents challenges, from shoveling waste to keeping him fed and hydrated. The simulation-like mechanics of controlling the horse and cart require precision and patience, with the risk of Ol’ Boy succumbing to discomfort or thirst.

One notable gameplay aspect is the reliance on quick-time events (QTEs), a divisive feature in serious games. Nightsoil introduces QTEs as a means to interact with Ol’ Boy, requiring players to respond to his emotional state with timely actions. Failing to console the horse in distress can lead to unexpected consequences, as experienced through a heart-wrenching QTE sequence that culminates in a tragic outcome. The blend of gameplay mechanics and narrative choices adds depth to the player experience, prompting reflection on the nature of empathy and responsibility.

Despite its initial challenges and satirical undertones, Nightsoil offers a unique gaming experience that invites players to explore themes of duty, companionship, and sacrifice. The game’s open-ended conclusion leaves room for interpretation, raising questions about the true purpose of the gong farmer’s journey. Whether viewed as a poignant historical narrative or a cleverly disguised spin-off, Nightsoil promises an immersive adventure for those willing to delve into its complexities. Available on Steam, this game is a testament to the diverse storytelling capabilities of indie developers like Miniscule Mayhem.
