League of Legends Overhaul Confirmed for 2027 Release
Riot Games has officially announced that League of Legends is undergoing major changes as part of an overhaul set to be released in 2027. This confirmation comes following a report by Bloomberg, which revealed details of the upcoming revamp. The developers of the popular MOBA game decided to share the news earlier than planned, stating that they are laying “the groundwork for League’s next era” now.
The overhaul, reportedly named “League Next” by Bloomberg, is expected to bring significant changes to the game and is likened to a full remake or sequel-like reimagining. Along with this announcement, Riot Games has hinted at an internal reorganization, although specific details on the effects of this reorganization were not provided.
Shortly after the report surfaced, Riot released a video featuring League studio head Andrei van Roon and executive producer Paul Bellezza, confirming the majority of the reported changes and the 2027 target release date. Van Roon explained in a tweet that the video was originally planned for an early January reveal but was shared sooner due to early speculation circulating.
Among the confirmed changes are a new “around-game” client that will be fully integrated with the in-game experience, a complete visual overhaul of the Summoner’s Rift map, gameplay changes linked to the visual update, adjustments to runes and pre-game choices, and improvements to the new player onboarding experience to attract more newcomers to the game.
Van Roon emphasized that these changes reflect Riot’s focus on what matters most to players and build upon the momentum of changes made in the past year. He also mentioned that more details about the overhaul will be revealed between the Mid-Season Invitational and World Championship League tournaments next year, including a more specific timeline for the 2027 release.
Players now have ample time to familiarize themselves with the current version of League of Legends before the overhaul arrives. Former RPS reviews guru Ed Thorn took advantage of this time to experience more of the game earlier this year, with encouragement from streamers.
