LG’s Copilot App: Optional Addition to Smart TVs
LG to Allow Users to Remove Microsoft Copilot Shortcut from Newer TVs
LG has announced that it will enable users to delete the Microsoft Copilot shortcut that was automatically installed on newer TVs, following complaints from customers. In a statement to The Verge, LG spokesperson Chris De Maria emphasized the company’s commitment to consumer choice, stating that they will take steps to ensure users can remove the icon if they so desire.
Unremovable Microsoft Copilot Icon Sparks Frustration
A recent Reddit post on the r/mildlyinfuriating subreddit brought attention to the issue, with a user sharing an image of the Microsoft Copilot icon among their apps on an LG TV, without any option to delete it. The post received over 36,000 upvotes, reflecting growing frustration among consumers regarding the proliferation of AI features.
De Maria clarified that the Microsoft Copilot icon serves as a shortcut to the web app, which opens in the TV’s browser, rather than being an embedded application. He also reassured users that features such as microphone input are only activated with explicit consent from the customer.
Regarding the timeline for allowing users to delete the Copilot icon, De Maria mentioned that no definitive timing has been established yet.
LG’s Official Statement on Microsoft Copilot
LG clarified that Microsoft Copilot is intended as a shortcut to enhance accessibility and convenience for customers, rather than being an integrated TV service. When users select the Copilot shortcut, they are directed to Microsoft’s website via the TV’s web browser, with additional features requiring explicit user consent.
