Lone Wolves and Teammates: Warren Spector’s New Adventure
Warren Spector’s Game “Thick as Thieves” Undergoes Major Gameplay Shift
During last year’s Day of the Devs event, Warren Spector, renowned for his work in immersive sims, announced that his studio OtherSide Entertainment was taking bold risks with their upcoming game, Thick as Thieves. Originally planned as a multiplayer immersive sim akin to Thief, where players competed to pull off heists on the same map, the game has now taken a different direction.
In a recent Steam blog post, it was revealed that Thick as Thieves has pivoted towards a more traditional immersive sim experience, focusing on two-player co-op and single-player modes. This decision was made after the developers found more enjoyment in solo and cooperative gameplay during the development process.
OtherSide Entertainment emphasized that this shift allowed them to enhance the game’s core feature, dynamic stealth gameplay. While details are scarce, a gameplay trailer is set to debut at the upcoming Triple-I Initiative showcase, offering a glimpse of the game’s new direction.
The decision to move away from PvPvE gameplay towards a more focused cooperative experience is likely a strategic move for the studio. With the challenging landscape of competitive multiplayer games and the struggle of niche genres to attract a wide audience, the shift to a more single-player friendly approach could prove to be financially sound.
Despite the practicality of the decision, there is a sense of disappointment at the missed opportunity for a unique competitive multiplayer experience. The concept of simultaneous heists with rival players was intriguing, albeit risky in today’s gaming market. Nonetheless, the promise of refined stealth mechanics in the revised version of Thick as Thieves is enticing.
Fans and critics alike await the gameplay trailer eagerly, hoping to see how the game’s new direction will play out. While the shift may have been necessary, the initial vision of a competitive multiplayer immersive sim will be missed. However, the potential for a polished and engaging stealth experience in Thick as Thieves remains high.
