AkzoNobel Confirms Cyberattack on U.S. Site

AkzoNobel, a leading Dutch paint company, has verified that hackers successfully infiltrated the network of one of its U.S. facilities. The breach, attributed to the Anubis ransomware gang, has been contained, with the company assuring that the impact is minimal.

According to a spokesperson from AkzoNobel, “We have identified a security incident at one of our sites in the United States. The incident has been confined to the specific site and is under control. The impact is limited, and we are taking necessary measures to notify and support affected parties, while collaborating closely with relevant authorities.”

With a workforce of 35,000 employees, AkzoNobel operates globally with an annual revenue surpassing $12 billion. The company’s portfolio includes renowned brands such as Dulux, Sikkens, International, and Interpon.

The Anubis ransomware gang claims to have accessed and leaked approximately 170GB of data from AkzoNobel, comprising nearly 170,000 files. The leaked information includes confidential agreements, email addresses, phone numbers, private emails, passport scans, material testing documents, and internal technical specifications.

The data published by Anubis exposes sensitive information, raising concerns about privacy and security breaches. AkzoNobel has not disclosed any details regarding their interaction with the threat actors.

Anubis ransomware, operating as a service, emerged in December 2024, offering affiliates a significant share of the ransom payments. By February 2025, the group had established an affiliate program on the RAMP forum, expanding its presence in the cybercrime landscape.

In June of the same year, Anubis introduced a data wiper tool, complicating recovery efforts by destroying victim files beyond retrieval.
