Iron Mountain: Recent Breach Limited to Marketing Materials

Iron Mountain, a prominent provider of data storage and recovery services, recently addressed a breach claimed by the Everest extortion gang, stating that it primarily impacted marketing materials.

Established in 1951 and headquartered in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Iron Mountain specializes in data centers and records management. With over 240,000 customers across 61 countries, including 95% of the Fortune 1000, the company is a key player in the industry.

The cybercrime group Everest claimed to have accessed 1.4 TB of “internal company documents,” including personal information on clients. However, Iron Mountain clarified that the breach was limited to a single folder on a file-sharing server containing marketing materials and no ransomware was deployed on the server.

The compromised credentials used by the attackers allowed access to the marketing materials folder only, with no breach of other Iron Mountain systems. The company confirmed that no customer confidential or sensitive information was compromised.

Everest ransomware group, known for data theft corporate extortion, has been targeting various organizations and acting as an access broker for cybercrime gangs. In August 2024, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services warned about Everest’s increasing focus on healthcare organizations in the U.S.

Everest, which has been active since 2020, engages in double-extortion attacks, threatening to publish stolen files unless ransoms are paid. The group has targeted hundreds of victims and is known for selling access to breached networks.

In April 2025, Everest took down its website after it was defaced, reflecting a shift in its operations. The group’s actions underscore the evolving landscape of cybercrime and the need for robust cybersecurity measures.
