Apple has made significant improvements to its entire AirPods lineup over the past few years, consistently introducing hardware and software upgrades that have elevated its earbuds to the top choice for music listening and seamless communication.

Today, features like Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency Mode have become mainstream, but there are several other hidden features in your AirPods that you may not be aware of.

One standout feature is Conversation Awareness, which allows you to effortlessly converse with others without removing your AirPods. Here’s everything you need to know.

Understanding Apple’s Conversation Awareness

As the name suggests, Conversation Awareness enables you to communicate with others while wearing your AirPods.

With this feature activated, your AirPods utilize their microphones to detect your voice. If they detect that you are speaking to someone, they will automatically lower the volume of your music, podcast, or other media, and enhance the voice in front of you, facilitating clearer communication.

Once your AirPods sense that you have finished speaking, they will raise the volume back to its previous level, allowing you to resume listening to your music without any interruptions. Conversation Awareness seamlessly restores your previous noise control settings, whether you were using active noise cancellation or transparency mode.

This entire process occurs automatically, but you also have the option to end a Conversation Awareness session by pressing and holding the stem of your AirPods.

Requirements for Using Conversation Awareness

Conversation Awareness is a fantastic feature, but it can only be utilized with a pair of AirPods equipped with H2 technology and Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) – such as the AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, or AirPods 4. Unfortunately, the AirPods Max do not currently support this feature due to their outdated silicon.

Activating Conversation Awareness on Your iPhone

To enable Conversation Awareness, simply connect your AirPods to your iPhone and follow these steps:

  1. Access the Control Center by swiping down from the top right corner of your screen.
  2. Long-press the volume slider.
  3. Tap the Conversation Awareness button located at the bottom of your screen.

That’s all you need to do. Now, engage in a conversation with someone, and your AirPods will automatically adjust the volume to accommodate your interaction.

Pro Tip: While on the move, you can also use Siri to “Turn on Conversation Awareness.”

Enhancing Your Conversation Experience

With Conversation Awareness, conversing with your AirPods on becomes effortless. You can effectively communicate with others hands-free.

However, there may be instances when you prefer not to engage in a conversation. It’s worth noting that Conversation Awareness may also activate when you are singing along to a song or even clearing your throat. In such cases, simply follow the aforementioned steps to disable Conversation Awareness if you find it unnecessary.
