Meta’s Newest Design Mastermind: The Former Architect of Apple’s Transformation

WWDC25 Alan Dye

Apple has recently faced a significant loss as its high-profile design executive, Alan Dye, has made a move to Meta in what is being described as a “major coup.” This transition comes as Meta expands into AI-equipped consumer devices beyond smart glasses and VR headsets.

Dye, known to many Apple enthusiasts as the face behind the new iOS 26 Liquid Glass design, had been leading Apple’s user interface design team since 2015. Initially reporting to Jony Ive, Apple’s former Chief Design Officer, Dye later oversaw the software division of the design team after the split into hardware and software divisions following Ive’s departure in 2019. This restructuring led to some friction within the design suite as Dye and his team navigated a new reporting structure under operations chief Jeff Williams.

The departure of several key industrial designers from Apple, including Evans Hankey in 2023 and Bart Andre in early 2024, marked the end of an era for the company’s hardware design team. Despite these changes, Apple’s software design team, led by Dye, remained focused on projects like the Vision Pro user interface and the Liquid Glass initiative. However, the pace of software design refreshes at Apple typically spans a decade, prompting Dye to seek new challenges.

Apple confirmed Dye’s departure and announced Steve Lemay as his successor, praising Lemay’s contributions to Apple’s interface design since 1999. Dye’s move to Meta as the chief design officer under the Reality Labs group signals a shift towards revamping consumer devices with AI features and leading the design studio for hardware and software teams.

The executive shakeups at Apple in the past year, including John Giannandrea’s departure and retirements of CFO Luca Maestri, COO Jeff Williams, and others, hint at potential larger changes within the company. Speculation surrounds the futures of key executives like Johny Srouji and Lisa Jackson, as well as the potential transition of Tim Cook to Chairman of the Board. With the design team entering a new era, questions linger about possible leadership restructuring in 2026.

As Apple navigates these changes, the company’s commitment to innovation and design excellence remains unwavering, setting the stage for a transformative year ahead.
