OnePlus Watch 3: Choosing Between the 43mm and 46mm Models

OnePlus Watch 3 43 mm Review vs 46mm OnePlus Watch 3 scaled

I have previously reviewed the OnePlus Watch 3, and it has been my favourite WearOS watch by a considerable margin. If I weren’t so deeply ingrained in the Garmin ecosystem, I would have switched to it as my personal watch and consistently recommended it to friends and colleagues.

A few months later, OnePlus launched the smaller Watch 3 43mm, which not only reduces the display size but tweaks the design, making it more elegant and feminine (for lack of a better word).

Recently, OnePlus was kind enough to send me this smaller watch to check out.

There is not much point in doing a detailed review of this, as it is functionally the same as the superb OnePlus Watch 3. I will instead focus on the differences, which include the overall appearance, battery life, and some missing features.

Specification OnePlus Watch 3 43 mm

Key Differences

  • The 46 mm model uses higher-end materials (titanium and sapphire) and is larger and heavier.

Dimension Comparisons

The 43mm model is 43.2 x 43.2 x 11 mm while the 46mm model is 46.6mm x47.6mm x 11.75mm mm.

Design Comparison

The 43mm model is more suitable but perhaps a bit more boring. It is an attractive watch, but it is basically just a circular face with a small crown. The watch strap design has changed a bit and is both thinner at 18mm and doesn’t flare out into the body of the watch, which adds to the overall impression of a smaller watch.

I have very slim wrists myself, and I never used to be fond of oversized watches, but I personally prefer the 46mm model.

I believe that design has more character in the 43mm model than anything else. Both models look great, and it ultimately comes down to personal preference. The battery life of the OnePlus Watch 3 43mm is excellent for a WearOS watch, although not as good as the 46mm model. The 46mm model is advertised to last 5 days with normal use or 3 days with heavy use, which seems accurate based on my colleague’s experience. The 43mm model, on the other hand, is expected to last 60 hours with normal use or 36 hours with heavy use. Three days of battery life is sufficient for a smartwatch, but the 46mm model outshines the 43mm in this aspect.

In terms of performance, the experience of the 43mm model is similar to the 46mm model. It excels in fitness and health tracking, offering features such as running power that were previously only available in premium sports watches. However, the 43mm model lacks ECG functionality and wrist temperature monitoring. These features may be useful for some users, but they are not essential for everyone.

In conclusion, the OnePlus Watch 3 43mm is a fantastic alternative to the 46mm model, offering a sleeker design and similar performance. While the 46mm model may provide better value overall due to its longer battery life and durability features, the 43mm model is a great choice for those who prefer a smaller and more elegant smartwatch. Ultimately, the decision between the two models comes down to personal preference and priorities.
