OpenAI Addresses Concerns Over Ads in ChatGPT

OpenAI has recently faced backlash from paying subscribers of ChatGPT regarding the appearance of promotional messages within the platform. While the company’s chief research officer, Mark Chen, emphasized that there are currently no live ads or advertising tests in ChatGPT, he acknowledged that there were shortcomings with the recent promotional messages and assured users that improvements are underway.

Responding to complaints from users about seeing promotional messages for companies like Peloton and Target, Chen and other OpenAI executives clarified that the company was only testing ways to showcase apps built on the ChatGPT app platform without any financial incentives attached to these suggestions.

Furthermore, ChatGPT head Nick Turley clarified that there are no live tests for ads, and any screenshots suggesting otherwise are either inaccurate or not related to ads. Turley emphasized that if OpenAI were to explore advertising in the future, it would be done thoughtfully to maintain the trust users have in ChatGPT.

In response to the controversy, Chen expressed regret for the oversights and pledged to disable such suggestions while enhancing the model’s precision. OpenAI is also working on providing users with better controls to adjust or disable these types of recommendations based on individual preferences.
