OpenAI Rumored to be Developing Claude-Like Abilities for ChatGPT
The Evolution of ChatGPT: Introducing “Skills”
In the latest development from OpenAI, ChatGPT is undergoing testing for a groundbreaking new feature known as “Skills.” This new addition is set to revolutionize the capabilities of ChatGPT, bringing it closer to the cutting-edge technology offered by Claude’s similar feature, also named Skills.
Historically, ChatGPT has been known for its adept support of GPTs, meticulously engineered prompts tailored to meet individual requirements. However, the introduction of Claude Skills marks a shift towards a folder-based instruction system that imparts specific abilities, workflows, and domain-specific knowledge to Claude AI.
One notable example of Claude’s enhanced capabilities is the frontend design skill plugin, enabling Claude to gain a deeper understanding of interfaces while users engage in coding for web applications.
Anthropic, the driving force behind this innovation, defines Skills as:
- Composable: Skills can be stacked together, with Claude automatically identifying and coordinating the required skills.
- Portable: Skills adhere to a universal format, allowing for seamless integration across various Claude applications, Claude Code, and APIs.
- Efficient: Skills load only essential components when required, optimizing performance.
- Powerful: Skills can incorporate executable code for tasks where traditional programming surpasses token generation in reliability.
Anticipating a similar advancement in GPT technology, ChatGPT is gearing up to unveil its own version of Skills. Codenamed “hazelnuts,” these Skills will be accessible through slash commands, featuring a dedicated Skills editor and the ability to convert custom GPTs into Skills.
While the exact release date for Skills on ChatGPT remains undisclosed, sources suggest a potential launch slated for January 2026.
