OpenAI Denies Ad Rollout on ChatGPT Plus Amid User Concerns

Recently, OpenAI faced backlash after users noticed what appeared to be ads on ChatGPT Plus, the company’s AI-powered chat platform. The controversy arose when users spotted recommendations for shopping apps while engaging with the AI.

One user shared their experience where, while asking a question about Windows BitLocker, they received an unexpected recommendation to shop at Target for groceries. This mismatch between the query and the recommendation raised concerns among users about the nature of these suggestions.

The image below shows an example of such a recommendation within ChatGPT Plus:

An OpenAI executive, Daniel McAuley, clarified that these recommendations are not traditional ads but rather app suggestions from pilot partners. McAuley emphasized that the goal is to integrate app recommendations seamlessly into conversations on ChatGPT, aiming for a more organic user experience.

McAuley stated, “Our goal is that apps augment the user experience when relevant to a conversation, and we’re still working on it. Anyone can build apps using the apps SDK, and we plan to open submissions and the app directory soon.”

Despite OpenAI’s explanation, many users still perceive these recommendations as ads due to their appearance within the chat interface, complete with brand logos, short messages, and calls-to-action. The controversy highlights the challenge of balancing commercial suggestions within an AI platform without compromising user trust.

Some users likened the recommendations to those seen in the Windows 11 Start menu, drawing parallels between AI-driven suggestions in different contexts.
