Outlander has made a name for itself as a series of fiery romance and bloody battles. The characters have travelled not only across countries but also across time, taking part in political intrigue, wars and uprisings.
Now, the time has come for the end – the eighth instalment of Outlander will be the finale of the saga about 20th-century nurse Claire and 18th-century Scottish Highlander Jamie. The first teaser for season 8 is already out, and Starz unveiled when the beloved series will return for the grand finale.
The end of Outlander doesn’t mean that the story of love and time-travelling will finish forever. Starz has decided to expand the universe with a spin-off called Blood of My Blood, which will tell the story of Claire’s and Jamie’s parents.
We’ve gathered the most essential information about the Outlander’s last instalment.
Outlander season 8 release date:
The eighth season of Outlander will premiere on Starz on Friday, 6 March 2026. It will consist of 10 episodes.
Outlander season 8 plot:
The eighth season will be based on Diana Gabaldon’s ninth book, Go Tell The Bees That I’m Gone. Set during the American Revolutionary War, the story follows Jamie and Claire as they struggle to keep their family together.
The official description of the season stated:
As Season 8 begins, Jamie and Claire soon find the war has followed them home to Fraser’s Ridge, now a thriving settlement that has grown and flourished in their absence. With new arrivals and changes made during their years away, the Frasers are confronted with the question of what they are willing to sacrifice for the place they call home and, more importantly, what they would sacrifice to stay together. While the Frasers keep a united front against outside intruders, family secrets finally coming to light threaten to tear them apart from the inside. Although they’ve left the war for America’s freedom behind, their fight for Fraser’s Ridge has only just begun.
One of the mysteries that season 8 will have to explain is the fate of Faith, Claire and Jamie’s youngest child. In season 2, the girl was stillborn in France, and Mother Hildegarde buried her in the cemetery at L’Hôpital des Anges.
However, in the season 7 finale, Claire overhears Frances, Jane Pocock’s younger sister, singing “I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside”. Frances claims that her mother, Fanny Pocock, taught her the songs. However, the song wasn’t written until 1907, and Claire sang it in France while holding her dead daughter. Therefore, the woman concludes that Faith may be alive.
One theory about how Faith could have survived involves Master Raymond, who saved Claire’s life during childbirth. In season 7, the mysterious man (who, in the books, turned out to be a time traveller) surprisingly reappears. Claire, recovering after the surgery, sees him in a dream – Raymond offers her an apology, though he doesn’t specify what he’s apologising for.
Fans speculate that Raymond, who practices magic, brought Faith back to life, but for some reason hid her from Jamie and Claire. The girl grew up and became the mother of Frances and Jane.
When asked about Faith’s fate, the showrunner Matthew B. Roberts replied that season 8 will provide answers on this matter:
You’ll get the answers in season 8. Obviously it’s a cliffhanger, but hopefully we tie it up in a bow with the answers and the explanations and what happens and the ramifications of all that on Jamie and Claire.
Outlander season 8 cast:
Knowing the plot of Go Tell The Bees That I’m Gone, we can predict who will appear in the next season of Outlander. We expect that the following cast members will reprise their roles:
– Caitríona Balfe – Claire
– Sam Heughan – Jamie
– Sophie Skelton – Brianna
– Richard Rankin – Roger
– John Bell – Ian Fraser Murray
– Charles Vandervaart – William Ransom
– David Berry – Lord John Grey
Sadly, Tobias Menzies, who played a double role as Claire’s modern-day husband Frank, and Black Jack Randall, Frank’s ancestor, won’t return in season 8, despite his character’s presence in the ninth book. Kristen Atherton, who in season 7 played Jamie’s sister, Jenny, won’t return in season 7, due to some cuts to the plot.
Kieran Bew will play a retired British soldier, Captain Charles Cunningham, while Frances Tomelty will star as his mother, Elspeth Cunningham. Season 8 will also feature Carla Woodcock as Amaranthus Grey, a new member of the Grey family.
