Pinball Quest: A Rogue Deckbuilder’s Adventure
Roguelike Deckbuilders: PinKeep – A Unique Twist on the Genre
The gaming industry is currently flooded with roguelike deckbuilders, making it challenging to distinguish the exceptional ones from the ordinary. However, PinKeep has managed to stand out by introducing a refreshing take on the genre – a pinball game where players modify the playfield as they progress through runs. Developed by the creators of the renowned Far series and Herdling, PinKeep offers a unique and engaging gameplay experience.
While the pinball aspect of the game is straightforward – with a ball and flippers for gameplay – it’s the customization of the playfield that sets PinKeep apart. Each run is divided into themed stages, allowing players to strategically add elements to the main playing field using cards collected during gameplay.
For instance, players can place bumpers on the field to propel the ball, strategically choosing from their card collection. To play these cards, players must spend in-game currency, which can be obtained by destroying trees and rocks with the ball. Resources collected from these elements can then be sold to merchants at the top of the screen by successfully guiding the ball towards them.
In addition to the gameplay mechanics, players must also contend with enemies advancing towards their town of operations. If enemies reach the player, they lose health. However, players have the ability to slow down time and precisely aim their shots to eliminate enemy threats, adding a strategic element to the fast-paced pinball gameplay.
The blend of fast-paced pinball action with strategic decision-making creates an engaging tactical experience for players. Customizing the playfield with elements like bumpers that have additional effects, such as goblins shooting arrows, adds depth to the gameplay and enhances the overall experience.
As players refine their playfield layout, a sense of harmony emerges, showcasing the strategic depth of PinKeep. While potential additions like changes to slow motion flick or flippers may enhance the gameplay further, the current demo of PinKeep shows promise and is on the right track. Players can try out the demo or wishlist the game to stay updated on its development.
