Rainbow Six Siege Resumes Online Play, Confirms No Hacking Involved
Rainbow Six Siege X: Security Breach and Controversy
Following a two-day server shutdown, Rainbow Six Siege X is now back online after Ubisoft addressed a significant security breach. On December 26th, players noticed unusual activity with billions of in-game currency and rare skins appearing in their accounts. Some players were banned and later unbanned.
Ubisoft has since rolled back all data to ensure players have the correct amount of in-game credit, known as Renown. Players may experience queues as they re-enter the game.
The security breach has sparked conflict between hacking groups claiming responsibility and making exaggerated claims about stealing Ubisoft’s source code. However, evidence suggests that the breach was not a result of hacking but rather bribery and corruption within an outsourced helpdesk support company in India.
Reports also indicate a separate group attempting to scam individuals by claiming to have personal data from the breach and demanding money. Ubisoft has not confirmed any user data breaches.
In June of this year, Ubisoft revamped the decade-old tactical shooter, renaming it Rainbow Six Siege X and introducing technical enhancements. The game also transitioned to a free-to-play model.
Rainbow Six is now part of a separate Ubisoft company, alongside Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry.
