Elon Musk’s AI Company xAI Faces Staff Departures Amid Safety Concerns

Recent reports suggest that Elon Musk is actively pushing for xAI’s Grok chatbot to become more unpredictable, as revealed by a former employee interviewed by The Verge. This revelation comes amidst a significant exodus of 11 engineers and two co-founders following SpaceX’s acquisition of xAI, which had previously acquired Musk’s social media company X.

While Musk has framed these departures as part of an effort to restructure xAI for better organization, sources within the company have expressed growing disillusionment with its safety protocols. The use of Grok to generate over a million sexualized images, including deepfakes depicting real women and minors, has drawn global scrutiny and raised concerns about the company’s approach to ethical AI development.

According to insiders, safety initiatives at xAI have been neglected, leading to a lack of oversight that has allowed harmful content to proliferate. One source described the safety department as non-existent, implying that Musk prioritizes pushing boundaries over ensuring user protection.

Additionally, former employees have criticized xAI for lacking clear direction and falling behind competitors in the AI industry. They feel that the company is struggling to keep up with advancements in AI technology, leaving them feeling stagnant and unfulfilled in their roles.
