Renault and Ford Partner to Produce Electric Vans in Europe
Renault and Ford Form Strategic Alliance for Electric Vehicles
Renault and Ford have recently announced a strategic partnership that involves Renault manufacturing two electric vehicles (EVs) for Ford. Additionally, the two companies will collaborate on van production. This alliance will see Ford-designed EVs based on Renault’s EV architecture and produced at Renault’s facility in Douai, France.
The first of these electric vehicles is expected to be available in European markets by early 2028. These entry-level models will complement Ford’s existing Explorer EV and Capri SUV, both measuring around 4.46m in length.
As part of the partnership, Ford is likely to utilize Renault’s AmpR Small platform, which underpins models like the Renault 5 E-Tech hatch, 4 E-Tech SUV, and Twingo E-Tech city car. This platform is also used in the Nissan Micra, which shares similarities with the Renault models.
While the existing Ford Explorer EV and Capri EV, based on Volkswagen Group’s MEB architecture, have faced challenges in terms of sales, the new Renault-based models aim to revitalize Ford’s electric vehicle lineup.
Aside from EV production, Ford and Renault have agreed to jointly develop and manufacture light commercial vehicles, potentially focusing on van segments. This collaboration is expected to expand Ford’s commercial vehicle offerings beyond their existing range.
In recent years, Ford has streamlined its passenger car lineup, discontinuing models like the Fiesta and Focus in Europe. The company has shifted its focus towards commercial vehicles, such as the Transit range, which has become a significant portion of Ford’s sales in the region.
Despite challenges in the European market, Ford has reaffirmed its commitment with plans to introduce new models, starting with the Renault-based EVs. Reports suggest that Ford is also exploring hybrid models, including a possible hybrid SUV bearing the iconic Focus badge.
Overall, the Renault-Ford partnership signifies a step towards innovation and collaboration in the electric vehicle and commercial vehicle segments, setting the stage for future developments in the automotive industry.
