Sony Unveils Upgraded PSSR for PS5 Pro Integration

Sony has recently announced the introduction of the enhanced version of PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) for the PS5 Pro. The update will kick off with a seamless integration with Resident Evil Requiem, along with plans for a system-wide toggle for backward compatibility in the near future.

The development of the new PSSR is a result of a collaborative effort between Sony and AMD on Project Amethyst. This partnership initially led to the creation of FSR 4 (FidelityFX Super Resolution) for the Radeon 9000 series GPUs on PC. The technology has now been optimized to work with the specialized upscaling hardware in the PS5 Pro. Mark Cerny, in an official statement, emphasized the significance of this advancement, stating, “With the updated PSSR, we’re providing the most cutting-edge technology co-developed with AMD, refined over six months specifically for PS5 Pro players.”

Upcoming game titles will have the opportunity to embrace this latest version of PSSR seamlessly, with comprehensive support and integration expected through a PS5 system software update in March. Cerny also confirmed that numerous existing games will receive upgrades to incorporate the improved PSSR during this period.

For games that do not undergo the upgrade process, Sony has ensured that they will not be left behind. Currently, approximately 50 games already support PSSR in some capacity, having been optimized to leverage the unique features of the PS5 Pro. As a result, Sony will introduce a system-level upgrade toggle post-March update, enabling users to activate the new PSSR functionality. By navigating to the Screen and Visio settings and selecting “Enhance PSSR Image Quality”, players can apply the latest algorithms and techniques to any PSSR-supported game.

This approach mirrors the interchangeable upscalers commonly found on PC, where users can swap out .DLL files or utilize tools like OptiScaler to introduce different upscaling techniques. While the transition is expected to be smooth for most games, there may be isolated instances of compatibility issues, as observed with the launch of Silent Hill 2 Remake, which initially struggled with the original PSSR implementation and necessitated subsequent patches.

Overall, the introduction of the upgraded PSSR marks a significant and long-awaited enhancement for the PS5 Pro. Enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating its implementation next month.
