Revamping Microsoft’s AI Promotions: Enhancing Delivery and Performance
Microsoft has developed a solution to address the inefficiencies in AI prompts, where responses miss the mark and the cycle repeats. This solution, called Promptions, aims to streamline the interaction between knowledge workers and large language models (LLMs) by introducing a UI framework that offers precise, dynamic interface controls.
The traditional trial-and-error loop in AI interactions can be unpredictable and discouraging, leading to a waste of resources. Promptions seeks to eliminate this friction by replacing vague natural language requests with specific options, making the interaction more guided and reliable.
The comprehension bottleneck
While AI is often associated with producing text or images, a significant aspect of its enterprise usage involves understanding—asking AI to explain, clarify, or teach. This distinction is crucial for internal tooling.
Current chat interfaces struggle to capture the intent effectively, with users often having to phrase questions repeatedly to match the AI’s expectations. Promptions addresses this issue by generating clickable options based on the user’s intent and conversation history in real-time.
Efficiency vs complexity
Microsoft researchers tested the dynamic controls of Promptions against static controls and found that participants could express their tasks more specifically without the need for constant rephrasing. While dynamic controls made prompt engineering easier, some users found them challenging to interpret, highlighting a balance between efficiency and complexity.
Promptions: The solution to fix AI prompts?
Promptions acts as a middleware layer between users and language models, with an Option Module that generates relevant UI elements based on the user’s prompt and a Chat Module that incorporates these selections into the AI’s response. This lightweight architecture eliminates the need to store data between sessions, addressing data governance concerns.
By moving from prompt engineering to prompt selection, Promptions offers a way to standardize AI outputs across an organization. While the system can streamline complex tasks, users may need to adapt to the learning curve of understanding how dynamic options influence AI responses.
Leaders should view Promptions as a design pattern to test within their internal developer platforms and support tools, rather than a complete solution to fix AI prompts. By implementing UI frameworks that guide user intent, organizations can improve the consistency of AI responses and enhance workforce efficiency.
