BMW Sold Brand-New 6 Series GTs Six Years After Discontinuation

Rediscovering the BMW 6 Series: A Look at the Unlikely Comeback

BMW enthusiasts may have fond memories of the BMW 6 Series, a model that has been out of production for several years. Surprisingly, two fortunate customers were able to purchase brand new BMW 6 Series vehicles last year, a remarkable feat considering the model’s discontinuation.

According to a report by Motor1, the two remaining 6 Series vehicles on the lot, both of the GT body style, were sold in the third and fourth quarters of the year. Despite being one of the lowest production volume 6 Series body styles, BMW managed to sell a significant number of these “posthumous” cars in recent years. In 2020 alone, 200 6 Series GTs were sold in North America, followed by 55 in 2021 and one in 2024.

Despite these impressive sales numbers, the 6 Series GT faced challenges due to its unique design. The GT models, including those in the 3 Series, 5 Series, and 6 Series, offered a blend of hatchback and sedan features. While the liftback design added practicality, it compromised on space compared to traditional wagons. Additionally, the unconventional proportions of the GT models made them less appealing to consumers, resulting in slow sales.

BMW i3

In addition to the 6 Series GT, BMW also successfully sold the BMW i3, a city car that marked the brand’s early venture into mainstream electrification. Despite its production ending, the MINI Cooper Clubman, a variant of the MINI Cooper 4-Door, also saw sales in 2025, showcasing a trend of reviving discontinued models.

While the 6 Series GT faced challenges in sales, it offered value in various aspects. Priced lower than the 7 Series, the 6 Series GT featured similar air suspension and amenities, making it an attractive option for some buyers. However, its unconventional design and slow sales reflected a disconnect with consumer preferences.
