- BMW’s first sporty SUV became a sales juggernaut. Its success transformed BMW into an SUV company and funded the technological dominance we see today.
If you were to list the number of important or impactful BMWs throughout its 100 years of existence, you’d be at it for a while. BMW has important cars dating back to the 1930s, and it’s still pumping out industry-changing machines. However, if you wanted to pinpoint only cars that changed the shape of BMW forever, there are three that stand out far more than the others.
To be considered truly game-changing cars, they have to draw a line in the sand of BMW’s history, bisecting what the brand used to be and what it became afterward. There are plenty of cars that caused BMW to shift a bit, like the E28 M5 and the BMW i3. However, these three cars forever changed the course of BMW’s direction.
BMW 2002
The BMW 2002 is considered Bavaria’s most important car, without which the BMW 3 Series and the iconic “Ultimate Driving Machine” slogan wouldn’t exist. This car redefined German sport sedans and changed America’s perception of lightweight, agile cars with modest power. The review by David E. Davis in Car and Driver showcased the 2002’s capabilities, proving it could outperform more established sports cars.
In 1974, BMW established a unified marketing vision centered on performance, inspired by the success of the 2002. The introduction of “The Ultimate Driving Machine” slogan solidified BMW’s reputation as a performance-oriented brand.
The BMW 2002 set the stage for BMW’s future sports sedans and differentiated the brand from Mercedes-Benz. It laid the foundation for BMW’s vision and changed the course of the company.
BMW M1

Before the M1, BMW had no M cars in its lineup. The M1, created as a road car for racing homologation, marked BMW’s entry into the performance car segment. Despite its limited sales success, the M1 established BMW as a manufacturer of high-performance machines with the launch of the M division.
The M1’s design and performance capabilities showcased BMW’s ability to compete with top supercar makers while maintaining comfort and reliability. It paved the way for mass-produced M cars like the E28 M5 and E30 M3, shaping BMW’s performance legacy.
BMW X5

The original BMW X5 marked a pivotal shift for the brand, transitioning BMW into the luxury SUV market. Recognizing the SUV trend in North America, BMW introduced a sporty and capable SUV with the X5, combining performance with functionality.
The X5’s success as a luxury SUV with sporty characteristics set the stage for BMW’s expansion into the SUV segment. It demonstrated that SUVs could offer both performance and versatility, leading to the development of a wide range of BMW SUV models.
The X5’s influence extended beyond its sales figures, shaping BMW’s direction towards SUVs and contributing to the brand’s financial success. While some enthusiasts may critique BMW’s SUV focus, the X5’s impact on the automotive landscape cannot be understated.
