€10m project accelerates AI adoption in UK science and business

New €10m European Project to Boost AI Adoption in the UK

A groundbreaking €10m project funded by the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) is set to revolutionize AI adoption among businesses and researchers in the UK. The main goal of this initiative is to unleash untapped economic and scientific potential by helping organizations embrace AI technology, understand its applications, and leverage its capabilities to drive productivity and economic growth.

The University of Edinburgh’s EPCC, the UK’s premier National Supercomputing Centre, has secured EU and UK Government funding to establish and oversee the UK AI Factory Antenna (UKAIFA). This project will involve a dedicated team of 20 experts at EPCC, focusing on providing services to startups, SMEs, larger industrial companies, and the public sector.

Accelerating AI Adoption across Key Sectors

The AI Factory Antenna at EPCC aims to build on the UK’s existing strengths and collaborate with partners to fast-track AI adoption in critical sectors such as health, fintech, energy, creative industries, advanced engineering, and robotics. This initiative is part of the EU’s AI Factories program, which promotes innovation, collaboration, and research in AI to benefit all industries.

Through the AI Factory Antennas, countries outside the EU, like the UK, can partner with an AI Factory to bring the advantages of AI technology to their regions.

The UK Government selected EPCC to spearhead the UK’s bid for an AI Factory Antenna, with the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology contributing £2.5m to the project.

Professor Mark Parsons, Director of EPCC and Lead Coordinator of UKAIFA, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating, “The funding from EuroHPC and the UK Government will enable us to embark on this new collaboration, leveraging our expertise in supercomputing to drive AI innovation.”

Collaboration with HammerHAI for International AI Advancements

The UK’s AI Factory Antenna at EPCC is partnering with the HammerHAI AI Factory, coordinated by the High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS) in Germany. This collaboration aims to harness the power of AI in manufacturing, engineering, and research sectors.

Dr. Bastian Koller, Managing Director at HLRS and Lead Coordinator of HammerHAI, highlighted the shared commitment to advancing AI adoption in European industries, stating, “The partnership with UKAIFA will focus on addressing the pressing challenges faced by companies in scaling up AI adoption.”

Dennis Hoppe, head of the HLRS Department of Converged Computing and project manager of HammerHAI, emphasized the joint efforts to accelerate AI innovation in Europe, providing secure and scalable AI resources for academia and businesses.
