Short Videos: The Rising Demand and the Role of AI in Content Creation

In today’s digital age, short videos have become incredibly popular, with platforms like Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok witnessing billions of video views daily. This surge in video consumption has led to significant benefits for companies, as they capitalize on this content explosion. However, for creators, this trend has also brought about increased pressure to produce more content to stay relevant and sustain a livelihood, particularly with the influx of AI-generated content on these platforms.

One individual who recognizes the potential of AI in aiding creators is Jay Neo, a former content lead for short videos at MrBeast. Neo, along with former Palantir engineer Shivam Kumar and creator Harry Jones, is working on a platform called Palo that aims to support creators in understanding their audience and generating new content ideas based on data-driven insights.

Neo’s journey began at MrBeast, where he focused on viewer retention and delved deep into analyzing metrics to understand viewer behavior. Over time, his role expanded to include editing and content ideation. One of his standout videos involved asking people if they would fly to Paris for a baguette, which garnered over 1.8 billion views. This success led Neo to launch multiple channels under the “Creaky” brand, amassing over a billion views per month.

Recognizing the power of content strategy and analytics, Neo transitioned to developing a product for creators based on his experiences at Creaky. This led to the inception of Palo in collaboration with Kumar and Jones in early 2024.

Palo’s platform comprises three key components: an AI-driven ideation and planning tool, analytics, and a community feature. Creators onboard onto the platform by integrating all their accounts, allowing the tool to analyze their short videos and provide insights on performance and audience engagement.

Kumar, Palo’s CTO, explained that the platform utilizes various models to extract data insights on hooks, audience sentiment, topic interests, originality, and related search terms. This data is then processed through an inference engine to create a personalized profile for each creator based on their style and preferences.

The AI planner within Palo features a conversational interface where creators can seek advice on content strategies and even generate scripts based on predefined formulas. For visually-oriented creators, the tool can generate storyboards with different hooks to enhance the storytelling aspect.

While the community aspect of Palo is still evolving, it currently allows creators to communicate and collaborate with each other.

During its testing phase, Palo collaborated with around 40 creators with substantial followings and is now extending its services to creators with at least 100,000 followers. The pricing starts at $250 per month, with higher tiers available for increased usage.

With a funding of $3.8 million from Peak XV’s Surge (formerly Sequoia India), NFX, and individual investors, Palo is poised for growth in the creator tooling space. Rajan Anandan, managing director at Peak XV, highlighted the team’s unique blend of creative expertise and technical acumen as a key factor in their investment decision.

Josh Constine, an investor in Palo and former TechCrunch editor, emphasized the tool’s potential in helping creators manage the demands of content creation without succumbing to burnout. He noted the challenge creators face in staying updated with trends and algorithms, which can lead to fatigue and creative block.

As AI continues to play a significant role in content creation, there is a delicate balance between leveraging technology for insights and preserving the creator’s unique voice. Palo aims to guide creators towards successful content strategies while acknowledging the irreplaceable value of human intuition in crafting engaging videos.

Sam Beres, a creator known as Sambucha, advised AI companies in the creator tooling space to collaborate closely with creators to address their specific needs and avoid overwhelming them with irrelevant information.

As Palo enters the market, it joins a landscape where AI-powered tools are becoming more prevalent, raising discussions around the impact of technology on the creative industry. While AI offers tremendous potential for enhancing content creation, it is essential for platforms like Palo to empower creators while respecting their individuality and creative instincts.
